Curly horses: examining the “hypoallergenic” claim
A Curly horse’s coat attracts attention. The promise of a horse suitable for an allergic rider requires a different kind of assessment: a look at medical evidence. A purchase should not depend on a guarantee that no allergic reaction will occur.
Different findings answer different questions
A 2018 study found no lower airborne allergen levels when grooming the Curly horses than the Quarter Horses studied. A 2024 analysis identified known respiratory horse allergens in hair extracts from both groups and did not support the claim that Curly horses are less allergenic. 2018 study, 2024 analysis.
Another publication reports reduced reactivity among allergic people exposed to Curly horses, with tolerance investigated separately in a subset of participants. Allergic reactions still occurred. If allergy drives your search, speak to your allergy specialist before arranging contact. We do not recommend brushing a horse for a set period as a do-it-yourself tolerance test.
Assess the individual horse too
Once the medical considerations are clarified, approach the purchase with the same care as any other horse. Ask about age, history, training and situations in which the horse has actually been ridden. “Quiet” needs context: alone on a hack, in a group, tied up or travelling?
Take a professional who can assess suitability for your intended riding. Arrange a pre-purchase veterinary examination appropriate to the project. A breed description replaces neither that examination nor observation of the individual.
Plan care and equipment
Ask the seller to demonstrate the actual grooming routine, tools used and any difficulties. Photograph equipment references and take useful measurements before ordering. Coat texture does not determine headcollar size, bridle width or saddle fit.
Divide your purchase notes into three sections: documented information, things observed and questions still to resolve. A sales claim such as “ideal for all allergic riders” belongs in the last section, not among established guarantees.
