Horse rugs: choosing for the intended use and checking the fit
Before selecting a fill weight, ask why this particular horse needs a rug today. Turnout or stable management, coat, condition and local weather matter more than an autumn-and-winter shopping schedule.
Agree the need with the yard
The British Horse Society advises assessing each horse individually and highlights the risk of over-rugging. Some horses can remain unrugged. For horses wearing rugs, it recommends daily removal to check the skin and look for rubbing.
With the person responsible, record the horse’s routine, any clipping, available shelter and who can adjust its equipment during the day. A purchase needs a workable plan for use and monitoring.
Separate the functions
A turnout rug is intended for outdoor use; do not assume a stable rug is waterproof. A cooler serves a purpose after exercise, while an exercise sheet is used during suitable work. Read the stated function instead of judging by thickness or how the fabric feels.
Separate intended use, construction and size when comparing products. A description emphasising strength but omitting fill information answers a different question from one giving only fill weight. Request the missing information before comparing prices.
