What is equifeel?

Among the disciplines you can take up with a horse as a rider, there is equifeel. Equifeel is a discipline of its own, and while it has points in common with several others, it also differs in many ways. So what exactly is equifeel? That's what we look at in this article.

What does equifeel involve?

Equifeel is a discipline born out of the enthusiasm for so-called natural horsemanship. It officially appeared in France in 2004 under the name "Tournoi d'équitation éthologique". At the time, equifeel consisted of groundwork exercises plus exercises combining both in-hand work and groundwork. In 2007, the discipline took the name we know today. It should be said that this change came with two major developments.

The very first change was that equifeel was divided into several categories so that it could suit every level and every type of rider. Ridden exercises were dropped, so that equifeel now only covers work from the ground. It should also be noted that equifeel is intended to be fun and educational, through tests to be completed with your horse in a spirit of mutual respect and calm.

Today, equifeel consists of a range of tests, around twenty of them, which you carry out with your horse. To find the equipment needed to practise equifeel, many riders turn to one of the largest online shops selling accessories of this kind.

Which riders can take up equifeel?

One of the important things to remember is that equifeel is open to everyone. Whether children or adults, experienced riders or beginners, anyone can do equifeel with their horse. It is all the more appealing a discipline in that it doesn't require expensive kit to take part. It is therefore accessible to every budget.

Equifeel is also a sport that is less dangerous than others. As a result, even pregnant women practise equifeel. They keep a real bond with their horses while keeping them fit, without having to take the risk of getting in the saddle.

Better still, equifeel is also suited to people with disabilities. There are even associations that welcome people with physical or learning disabilities and have them practise equifeel. According to these associations, equifeel allows the handler to work on their independence, their emotions, their motor skills, their communication and their respect for the animal. Equifeel thus becomes a genuinely complete discipline with a great deal to teach.

What's more, while equifeel is open to all riders, almost all horses can take part too. Many professionals agree that equifeel is the ideal discipline when it comes to educating young horses. It allows horses to learn the basic cues and mutual respect, and introduces them to all sorts of new things.
