Sidepull and halter: what are the differences and similarities?

Sidepull and halter are everyday words for the experienced rider. They have already used both and know exactly what each one is for. For a beginner, the differences and similarities are not so easy to spot. Here is a quick reminder.

Sidepull and halter: the differences

A sidepull is seen as a piece of equipment the rider uses like a snaffle bridle to tack up the horse before going out. It is sometimes used for hacking and for quiet rides. The sidepull can therefore replace the conventional bit and be used where there is a very high level of understanding between rider and horse.

The sidepull has a chin strap and sometimes a jowl strap. This is a solution manufacturers came up with to improve comfort for the horse. That way the ropes do not end up over the horse's eyes, and the tightening forms a V shape at the front for a better ride.

As for the halter, it is a piece of equestrian equipment sold separately from the lead rope. Its basic purpose is to bring the horse out of the stable and into the training area for further work. Hence its importance for groundwork. The rider uses the halter for the precision of the information the horse receives. The horse is, moreover, very receptive to it.

Another use for the halter is tying up, to keep the horse in one place without bothering it while you get on with other things. Some experienced riders still use it for a hack, despite its simplicity. The halter, a much older piece of kit than the sidepull, is even used by professionals for short, fast rides out in the countryside. It is fairly snug, but sits well, allowing the horse to pick up quickly on the information coming through the lead rope.

Sidepull and halter: the similarities

The main thing the sidepull and the halter have in common is that they have to be fitted to the horse. Neither is universal enough to suit every horse as it comes. They need to be adjusted by tightening the straps and positioning them correctly. That is the key condition for getting the best possible comfort.

Another thing they share, both in use and in care, is that the sidepull and the halter are easy to handle. Given their design, a brush and a few drops of soapy water, depending on the material, are enough to get them clean and ready to use again. In use, the lead rope is the only thing you need to add to enjoy your horse in complete peace of mind.

It should also be said that the halter and the sidepull offer the horse excellent comfort around the nostrils and the bridle area. The horse can graze quite happily. That said, to use either without mishap you need to be experienced and to have a good command of your animal. Otherwise you risk causing injuries, or losing control should the horse bolt off to let off steam.
