Spanish horses and PREs: verify identity before choosing
An advertisement for a Spanish horse may describe origin or type without establishing breed registration. If you want a Purebred Spanish Horse, or PRE, begin with the documents. Silhouette, flowing hair and an attractive dressage video do not prove registration status.
What does the stud book establish?

Request the registered name and identification references before travelling. Compare the information with the documents supplied and resolve discrepancies. Verified ancestry does not, however, provide a health guarantee or establish a horse’s training level.
Describe the work you actually want
“Schooled” can cover very different experiences. Ask which movements the horse performs, under what conditions and with which rider. If you want to hack, ask about that specific experience rather than relying on an arena demonstration.
If your aim is to learn dressage, have your instructor assess the horse and how you work together. Impressive movements in a video do not establish that transitions, steering and rhythm will be manageable at your current level.
Plan the meeting
First observe ordinary handling by someone who knows the horse. Then arrange a trial suited to your ability and its reported training. Do not request an advanced movement solely to test a sales claim.
Discuss a pre-purchase examination with a veterinarian independent of the seller, explaining the intended use. Request the known history and details of ongoing care. The price attached to a bloodline or coat colour cannot replace that assessment.
Fit the saddle to the individual
Do not assume that all PREs share one back shape or need the same tree width. Available saddle-support area, back profile, muscle development and rider requirements need assessment together. Have equipment tried and checked in an appropriate setting.
For an artisan commission, supply the measurements and observations requested by the professional. A product described as suitable for Iberian horses still needs an individual fit assessment. Budget for follow-up after arrival as well: changes in work or body condition may call for another check. Choose on the basis of the horse in front of you, rather than an idealised breed silhouette.
