Becoming a riding instructor in France: preparing for training

Enjoying riding and enjoying teaching are different motivations to examine. Before choosing a course, observe an instructor’s daily work: explaining, adapting sessions, supporting pupils and organising horses’ activity. Your career plan should concern that whole job, not simply time spent in the saddle.

Check the qualification being offered

Ask the provider for the exact qualification and current registration reference. A qualification’s classification level is not itself a school certificate required for admission. Confirm the prerequisites, tests, first-aid documents, possible exemptions and selection arrangements for your particular intake.

Assess your preparation

Review the published tests with an instructor and compare them with your current ability. Identify preparation needed before applying. Holding a French Galop qualification should not be assumed to satisfy every selection requirement automatically.

With the centre’s agreement, observe several teaching situations: beginners, children, adults and groups of differing experience. Note what attracts you and what you would find challenging. Those observations will help you explain your career intentions during an interview.

Compare training providers

Obtain the calendar, the balance between training-centre and workplace learning, tutoring arrangements and assessment schedule. Check who helps secure a placement and what happens if it changes during training.

Compare the full budget, including tuition, accommodation, travel, equipment and additional charges. A possible funding route is not an approved funding award. Establish the conditions and obtain written confirmation before committing financially.

Prepare to work professionally

Paid sports instruction in France is regulated. Professional declaration enables the administration to check qualifications and statutory suitability; permitted activities depend on the qualification held. Prepare these steps with your training provider as you approach completion. When considering a job, examine the actual duties, working hours and support offered. Qualifying does not guarantee a particular salary or automatic promotion after a fixed number of years. If you hold an overseas qualification, seek advice on recognition before assuming that it authorises the same work in France.
