Competition riding clothes: prepare your outfit before the event
Before buying a jacket or light-coloured breeches, identify the exact event: discipline, category, series and date. An outfit seen at another competition is not evidence that it meets your requirements. Start by checking the rules, then try the complete combination.
Make a checklist with your instructor
For events in France, begin with the FFE’s discipline regulations. Identify the applicable edition and its clothing provisions. Ask your instructor to clarify any additional organiser instructions. For events elsewhere, use the relevant governing body’s rules.

Try the complete outfit
Take your chosen protective equipment to a jacket fitting. Comfort when a garment is worn alone does not establish how the whole combination works. Try familiar riding movements, check sleeves and lower-back coverage, and fasten the jacket while seated.

Buy what is missing
List what you already own and what the school can lend. Separate items needed for entry from decorative preferences. Try borrowed equipment early enough to check its fit.
For a first outing, choose clothes with care instructions you understand and plan for an item being damp or damaged. The number of pieces you need depends on your arrangements, not a list of brands to copy.
Prepare for departure and return
A few days before the event, assemble clothes, footwear and protection and inspect them. Check fastenings, look for missing components and reread instructions for unfamiliar equipment. Avoid discovering how something operates on departure morning.
Afterwards, air, clean and store each item according to its instructions. Record anything uncomfortable during the day: a sleeve, seam or temperature change. That practical experience will guide the next purchase better than searching for a supposedly perfect outfit.
