Choosing a saddle pad: shape, thickness and details to check
Choose a pad for the saddle it will accompany. An attractive design or a “horse size” label does not establish that it will fit. Before ordering, gather your saddle’s model and measurements, along with the details of the pad you currently use.
Assess the horse, saddle and pad together
The French equine institute IFCE explains that a pad primarily protects the saddle from sweat and dirt. Its shape should leave the spine clear, without folds or edging beneath the saddle’s bearing surfaces. Extra thickness can change saddle balance and fit; a thick pad is not an automatic solution to a poorly fitting saddle. Shims and additional pads require assessment of the whole combination. What to ask before ordering

Send a photograph of your current setup if the workshop requests one. Explain what works and what you want to change: insufficient coverage under a flap, awkward washing, a colour or an inconvenient girth loop. A specific request is more useful than asking for “the most comfortable pad”.
Two French-made examples
The Couleur Poney dressage saddle pad is described as made in Rhône-Alpes, with wadding and a honeycomb underside. Its listing specifies a black base and a patterned cotton insert. Ask for dimensions if they are missing from your chosen version’s details.
The Cocotte Minette handmade saddle pad, made in Brittany, offers several cuts and sizes. Its listing specifies a 100% cotton honeycomb underside and 1 cm foam filling. Materials and personalisation can be discussed with the workshop. The thickness describes this product; it is not a recommendation for every saddle.
Your choice therefore depends on the project: shape, dimensions, fabrics and options. Check the lead time for your order rather than assuming a handmade piece is already in stock.
On arrival, and during care
Before use, compare the item with your order: measurements, shape, underside, straps and personalisation. Keep the product reference and the workshop’s instructions. If something differs, photograph it and ask for advice before washing or altering the pad.
Follow the instructions for the complete product, including its decorations. Care guidance for one fabric does not necessarily apply to the assembled pad. Allow enough time between uses to have a clean, dry pad available, without accelerating drying through an unapproved method.
Colour is a personal choice. For competition, also check the requirements of your event before ordering permanent customisation.
